Mountain Hike

We went hiking in the Rocky Mountains to look at fall colors, although mid-October was a couple weeks late for most of the pretty foliage. It was a fun family day with beautiful views, anyway.

We climbed to a rocky peak, from which we could watch a train chug 'round the neighboring mountain and cross a river in the valley below.

A large crevice split the giant rock into two peaks, so we explored the narrow crack leading steeply down to the valley.

We breaked for a picnic lunch at a lakeside playground.

After lunch, we wandered along a river than ran under train tracks. The large pile of rocks here is from construction of the train tracks.

You can see a patch of yellow Aspen leaves on the mountainside as well as plenty of naked Aspen who already lost their leaves.

Then we drove to Moffat Tunnel and hiked on a trail that led to the Continental Divide (although we didn't make it that far).

The girls were excited to find icy remnants of the previous week's mountain snowfall.

The trail took us over several small bridges.

But eventually we were exhausted and needed to head back home. The girls all napped in the car.
